Bazalt – Guided Tours for Students

What connects the cobblestones beneath our feet to picturesque Badacsony? How does barbed wire get into the trunk of a tree? What memories can sounds, images and smells evoke? The exhibition Basalt. The Layers of Oblivion is about forced-labor camps in Hungary, particularly about the camp in Badacsony. At the same time, or perhaps above all, it is about the possibilities and impossibilities of not only historical but also personal memory.

The history of the forced labor camp in the Badacsony basalt quarry, near the lake Balaton, is missing from history books, and its documents have disappeared. On the 70th anniversary of the closure of the labor camps, the Archivum’s research has unearthed fragmentary sources, and attempts to reconstruct the human side of the camp’s operation, the layers of memory and oblivion.

For groups of secondary school and university students, the historians of the Archivum will offer free guided tours of the exhibition. Interested teachers are invited to contact us at archivum@ceu.edu to arrange a visit.

The program is in Hungarian.
