Article 31(1) of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child states that “States Parties recognize the right of the child to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child, and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts. This right ensures the physical and mental development of children.” But how does this work in practice? To what extent is this right realized within the framework of Hungarian public education? In connection with the exhibition Do You Dare to Play? Play and Democracy in East Berlin, the participants of the roundtable discussion will explore not only the right to play, but also issues of democratic education and education for democracy.
